We have seen throughout this book the valuable role IP rights can play in protecting your company’s valuable revenue streams. In this Chapter we cover in more depth the protective, defensive value of IP rights. But we also discuss when to put your IP rights into active use by asserting them (or threatening to assert them) against others. It is sometimes necessary to do more that stockpile or store up rights. For them to help your business, you sometimes have to use the enforcement power behind IP rights. This is an example of an old saying from the world of sports: “The best defense is a good offense.”
