Preface 1 Going to Modernization of Traditional Chinese Medicine from Meridian Research

中医学与现代科学技术相结合，逐步实现中医现代化，是当代中医发展的必然趋势。要实现真正意义上的中医现代化，而不是中医西医化，关键是要在吸收现代科学技术的过程中，始终以中医理论为基石，保持与发扬中医诊疗特色，经络研究正好是实现这一目标的突破口。

The combination between Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and modern science and techniques is an inevitable tendency of contemporary development of TCM. In order to actually realize modernization of Traditional Chinese Medicine rather than a western medicine type, the key points are to keep and develop the features based on the TCM theory and therapy during the process to absorb modern science and techniques. The meridian- collateral (latter only meridian for simplification) research is just a breakthrough to realize this purpose.

中外科学技术界已经围绕经络理论及其应用进行了半个多世纪的研究，学术界之所以十分重视经络研究，不仅因为经络理论是针灸学的理论基础，更重要的还是因为经络理论是中医理论体系的核心，正是由于经络系统表现出来网络周身、沟通表里、运行气血、调和阴阳等功能，才使中医理论的整体论、天人相应论、动态平衡论具备了实实在在的科学内涵。

The foreign and domestic communities of science and techniques have been researching the meridian theory and its application for more than half a century. The reason why the scholar society has paid serious attention to the meridian research consists in the meridian being not only the theoretical foundation of acupuncture, but also the core of the theoretical system of TCM. The represented functions, of meridian system, such as the whole body as a network, linking external and internal of the body, running ‘qi’ and blood and regulating Yin and Yang, lead to TCM actually having the scientific contents, such as the theory of global characteristics, the theory of“relevant adaptation of the human body to natural environment”and the theory of dynamic balance.

面对着经络理论缺乏用现代生命科学知识证实和表达的现状，现代的经络研究者都通过自己的工作来回答以下三个问题：其一，经络是不是客观存在的生命现象？其二，在现代科学意义上的经络实质是什么？其三，怎样才能实现经络理论用于临床诊疗实践的现代化？回顾过去半个多世纪的经络研究状况，很多研究者已经针对这三个问题给出了自己的答案。我们如果将各家的研究结果集中起来进行分析与比较，将会从中找到某些共同性的结论或者倾向性的看法。自20世纪80年代以来，胡翔龙、刘澄中、刘里远、张维波、朱兵、李定忠等都已分别著书立说，结合自己的工作，评述诸家的研究成就，阐明自己对经络的看法。最近，李定忠教授又把他的见解进一步深化，从生物量子信息医学的角度对中医经络重新进行审视和定位，撰写了10篇论文。由于我一向关注经络研究进展，以及生物能信息医学和量子医学等的临床应用，所以深感李定忠的看法与我的看法颇为契合。在这里，愿就经络研究的三大课题，概括地说一说我的看法，以表示对李定忠见解的赞同。

Facing to the present situation of the meridian theory being lack of verification and expression with the contemporary knowledge of life (biological) science, at the time being, all the researchers on meridian have answered the following three questions with their own works. The first is whether the meridian is the objectively existed biological phenomena. The second is what is the essence viewed from the sense of modern science. The third is how the meridian theory could be used in the modernization for clinical therapeutic practice. Focusing on these three questions, many researchers have given their own answers. If we gather all these answers together to analyze and compare, some common conclusions and viewpoints having same trend would be obtained. Early since 80th of 20 century, HU Xianglong, LIU Chengzhong, LIU Liyuan, ZHANG Weibo, ZHU Bing, LI Dingzhong et al., have their published books as well as their own theories, about which they evaluated the achievement of other authors combined with their own works to explain their own understanding to the meridian Recently, Professor LI Dingzhong put forward his views further in the published 10 papers, in which the TCM meridian is examined and relocated from the scope of biological-quantum information. For the sake of my long term attention on the medicine of biological energy information and quantum medicine used for clinical application, I deeply feel that the idea of LI Dingzhong and mine are highly consistent with each other. Here I would like to briefly mention my understanding on these three topics to express my admiration and the consistence with LI Dingzhong’s viewpoints.

（1）循经感传、循经皮肤病、循经电特性、循经磁特性、钙离子浓度的循经变化、低频声信息的循经传递、放射性同位素的循经迁移，以及红外辐射轨迹的循经显示等现象的研究观察，都证明在人体或动物体内，确实存在着如同《黄帝内经》所描述的“气血”运行的环路（循行流）。通过研究，看到这些“气血”运行路线具有三个特点：一是在一定的时空范围内，呈现出程序化的动态的运行规律；二是在机体疾病或亚健康状态下，表现出向着病痛部位延伸的趋病性；三是刺激路线的某些点，可以引起环路的部分段落或全程乃至相关脏器的特征性反应。

Concerning the research and observation for the following phenomena, such as propagation sensation along meridian (PSM), dermatoses along meridian, electric characteristics along meridian, magnetic characteristics along meridian, the concentration change of calcium along meridian, low frequency sound information transferring along meridian, radioactive isotopes migrate along meridian and the display of infrared radiation tracks along meridian, all these verify the real existence of circulated route of“Qi and blood”(circulated flux) in the human body or animals just as described in Huangdi Neijing. Through these researches, it could be seen that the running route of“Qi and blood”has three features: firstly, in the definite timespace domain, the running route presents the law of routinization dynamic operation; secondly, under the situations of ill organism or sub-health, the route extents to the pain location with the feature of trend to the illness; thirdly, stimulating some points in the route might lead to the characteristic reactions at part or whole route even to the relevant viscera.

通过对经脉循行路线及其变化规律的多途径、多方法的现代科学验证，学术界已经得出一个共同结论：经络不是出于古人的臆想，而是客观存在的生命现象。

For the meridian running route, by the modern scientific verification with multiple ways and methods, the scientific society has got a common conclusion: the meridian did not come from the assumption of the ancients, but it is the objective existence of the biological phenomena.

（2）关于经络实质，早期的研究者大多着眼于神经机制，然而，由于神经机制并不能解释所有的经络现象，所以，一些研究者把目光转向微观世界，用生物体内的电、磁、光各种生物能及量子等微观粒子理论来解释已被发现的各种经络现象。其中，最有实践根据和理论根据的看法，就是把“气血”看作具有类似量子特征的循经运行的物质—能量—信息流。经络量子化通道是生物体自组织产生的生命现象，所以它在生物体内只有载体，而没有单独的实体。

Concerning the essence, more researchers in early period focused on the neural mechanism.However, for the sake of the neural mechanism being not able to explain all the meridian phenomena, some researchers cast their eyes to the microscopic fields, by using electricity, magnetism, optics, various biological energy as well as quantum micro-particle theories occurring in the biological organism, to explain the meridian phenomena having been discovered. Among these theories, the understanding with most theoretical and practical grounds is that the ‘qi-blood’ is regarded as the flux of material-energyinformation having some similarity to quantum features. The quantum channels of the meridian are the biological phenomena of the self- organization of biological organism. Hence, these channels have only carriers without any independent entity.

经络量子化运行是怎样传输物质、能量和信息的？又是怎样通过传输物质、能量和信息而实现对相关组织器官功能的沟通联动？这些有待深入研究，然而有一点是肯定的：迄今已被研究证实的经络调整作用，都是通过信息触发、生物共振，依靠神经、体液、免疫、循环、代谢、生物内能的转换及超微机构的调节来实现的，似乎经络在各种调节机制之间起着程序化综合调整作用。

How does the quantum operation of the meridian transfer material, energy and information? How does the linking up and combined movement with tissues and organs through transferring the material-energyinformation are realized? These questions are expected to be profoundly researched further. Nevertheless, one point is confirmed: the regulative effect of the meridian having been verified, is realized by information triggering, biological resonance, transform relying on nerves, body fluid, immunity, circulation, metabolism and biological energy, as well as realized by the adjustment with super-micro- structures The meridian seems to play an important role of“routinization”synthetic regulation among various adjusting mechanisms.

（3）20世纪下半叶，以经络理论和规律为基础的各种“场效应医学”纷纷面世。这些医学的共同点，都是按照量子物理学关于频率相同的波引发共振的原理，对疾病进行诊断和治疗。而且在临床上不断取得振奋人心的治疗效果，特别是按照机体固有程序进行程序化的、整体的、多系统的同时调整，把人类医学推进到一个新的高度。可见，中医现代化之路，离不开经络研究。

In the second half of 20 century, various kinds of“field effect medicine”based on the meridian theory and laws appeared to the people. The common points of these kinds medicine consist in the following aspects: the diagnostics and therapy for diseases are all based on the resonance induced by the waves with the same frequencies caused by quantum physics. Thus far, many excited results in the clinical therapy have been obtained. In particular, the simultaneous regulation according to the intrinsic programs of organism to proceed for regulation with“routinization”and multiple systems, which pushes the human medicine to a new height. From this, it could be seen that the TCM modernization will not leave away from researching meridian.

从以上三者的经络研究来看，不论是理论方面还是临床应用方面，都已取得了巨大的科学成就，可是由于生命科学研究队伍的大多数学者，已经习惯于用结构与功能统一的观点审视一切生命现象，所以，当他们无法确定发生经络现象的物质基础时，就会对经络研究的重大进展视若无睹，总认为还没有突破。面对这种情况，近十年来，我一直主张把生物能信息医学之类的思路与方法引进到经络理论研究和临床诊疗中来，目的就是要让中医走上一条符合自身特点的现代化之路。最近，李定忠教授提出了“为中医经络在生物量子信息医学中找出科学定位”的主张，也是为了把经络研究纳入一条符合经络特点的前进轨道。

Viewed from above mentioned three items of meridian research, not only in the theoretical research but also in the clinical applications, the great achievements have been obtained. However, most of the scholars in the field of the biological science are accustomed to inspect all the biological phenomena with a viewpoint of unification of structure and function. Hence, while they could not determine the material foundation of the meridian phenomena, they would always neglect some important advances, and consider no serious breakthrough happening. Facing to this situation, in recent ten years, I always advocate to introduce those concepts and methods of the medicine with biological energy and information into the meridian for its theoretical research as well as clinical diagnostics and therapy, the purpose of which is to let the TCM going on a modernized way corresponding to its own characteristics. Recently, the advocate proposed by Professor LI Dingzhong“looking for the location of TCM meridian in the medicine of biological quantum information”is also to make the meridian research to be involved in the advanced rails and orbit corresponding to its own characteristics.

我深信，经络研究如能把着眼点切实与系统科学、生物信息科学和微观量子科学有机地结合起来，不但会将经络理论提升到一个新的科学高度，还会展示出一条令人耳目一新的中医现代化之路。

I deeply believe if the meridian research would be able to focus on the combination with systematic science, biological information science and microscopic quantum science, not only the meridian theory could be elevated to a new height, but also a quite new TCM modernization way would be opened up before our eyes.
